The incidence of dengue in Brazil has increased. This year alone, more than 300,000 cases of the disease have been recorded across the country, 43.8% more than in 2022, and 87 confirmed deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The Federal District (DF), however, stands out for indicating a scenario contrary to this increase that has occurred in most states. In 2023, until the beginning of March, the capital presented a significant reduction of 48.8% in the number of probable cases of dengue compared to the same period last year. In addition, there were no reports of deaths from the disease in the region.

The positive results are a consequence of the intensification of actions to combat the mosquito aedes aegypti carried out by the Government of the Federal District (GDF) and the expanded and careful work of the Health Secretariat (SES). The goal is to monitor dengue outbreaks, prevent the spread of the transmitting mosquito and control the spread of the disease.
Also in October 2022, the ministry invested BRL 3 million in the purchase of 4.5 tons of insecticide to strengthen actions against the insect, which also transmits zika, chikungunya and yellow fever viruses. The acquisition was made to supply the DF until June 2023 or until the Ministry of Health regularizes the national shipment of the product.

“Everyone can and should contribute. If everyone acts as a health agent in their own home or workplace, we will have a great advance in the fight against dengue and, who knows, we will reach even better rates”Divino Valero, Undersecretary of Health Surveillance
The undersecretary of Health Surveillance, Divino Valero, explains that the key is planning and prevention. “The difference was that we didn’t wait for epidemiological data and we worked on the main milestone of this care, which is the control of the transmitter. We advanced our actions and were proactive so that now, in the rainy season, we do not have high numbers of cases ”, he reports.
Already this year, more than a thousand professionals from the environmental surveillance teams checked 500 thousand properties and almost 100 thousand possible deposits of the aedes aegypti were eliminated or treated. Visits are made daily with educational and correction approaches, when irregularities are found.
In addition to these actions, the use of mosquito egg capture traps helps to prevent the proliferation of possible transmitters. to contain the aedes aegypti adults, the strategy is fogging, which sprays the insecticide and passes it in blocks, neighborhoods and places where the high rate of confirmed cases of dengue and high mosquito infestation are identified.
collective protection
The work to prevent the spread of the mosquito and contribute to the reduction of cases of dengue, chikungunya and zika goes beyond the SES teams. The Health Surveillance representative recalls that the population has an important role in this task.
“Everyone can and should contribute. If everyone acts as a health agent in their own home or workplace, we will have a great advance in the fight against dengue and, who knows, we will reach even better rates”, reinforces Valero.
For society to do its part, it is necessary to prevent the accumulation of water in backyards, in basins, buckets, water tanks, tires and bottles – places that favor the evolution of the larva and the reproduction of the aedes aegypti. The population must also notify the Environmental Surveillance about outbreaks around their homes by calling 160.
